What is wrong with the voting machines we have?

A question you may be asking is what is wrong with our old paper ballots or punched cards. I like those older systems. They do have problems, but the problems with those old systems are small compared to the problems we currently face. These older systems are just no longer acceptable because of a law passed in 2002. In short, this law states that all voters, with the exception of absentee/mail-in voters, shall use electronic voting machines by the year 2006. Your city or town may take measures to delay using electronic voting machines, but it will be a delay; electronic voting machines are coming to your town. The earliest business to supply these required machines was Diebold. Several issues have been noted regarding Diebold's voting machines. Most notably Diebold machines:

Use secret code which the public is not allowed to review.
Contain strict legal agreements in their licensing which may prevent officials from public disclosure of known flaws.
Contain "back-door" access in the central tabulator which facilitates vote manipulation. For more details, see the Equal Justice Foundation documentation.
Were found to contain "back-door" access to the voting machines which gave Diebold the ability to change programs running on the day of an election.
Contain known flaws which can be used to manipulate elections.
Have been known to be manipulated in elections in California (especially in Tulare county), Georgia, Ohio, and Florida (where Al Gore received a negative 16,022 votes).
After more than six years, this company which builds ATM machines is just now beginning to provide a "paper trail" or any auditing beyond a count of ballots.
Contain no method for performing a meaningful recount.
